Protection, Health and Care Conference 2018: Plenary 4: Protection, Health & Care in 2050

Edison said in 1903 “The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will instruct his patient in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease”. This was the original aim of the NHS, and could we now be entering that era?  We have a better understanding of modern disease (diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, cancer, obesity), and cures are on the horizon.  We need to move (back) into managing lifestyle factors.  The presentation will cover:

• Where does this leave Health & Protection Insurance?

• The economic and social implications of people living as long as they want, with potential to slow ageing further with biomedical gerontology.

• What products can the industry offer to help this evolution (and what is our ethical responsibility)?

• Is focus on wellbeing and prevention key – de-medicalising how we think, to realise what Edison was referring to?

• How do we think holistically about nutrition, sleep, mental health and fitness?

• How do we use behavioural economics to change behaviour and impact health?

• What will Insurance look like in 2050? How do we begin now, in the next 5-10 years, and beyond?

Technical Knowledge: The technical knowledge of the session is general knowledge of Health & Protection Insurance, with current product knowledge.oWe will consider Behavioural Economics, Economic Uncertainty and impact on customers, Emerging Risks/Horizon Scanning (eg new products, cures of all modern disease, business risk)
