An overview of the Pragmatic Stochastic Reserving Working Party's recent paper "A Practitioner’s Introduction to Stochastic Reserving: The One year view" which can be downloaded from the working party's page on the IFoA website. The talk will be introductory. I will describe and discuss three commonly use methods for calculating one-year reserve risk: the Merz-Wüthrich formula, the Actuary-in-the-Box, and Emergence Patterns. I will avoid technical details as far as possible, and attempt to give an intuitive description of the methods, and discuss their strengths and weaknesses.
